﴿ ضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلذِّلَّةُ أَيْنَ مَا ثُقِفُوٓا۟ إِلَّا بِحَبْلٍۢ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَحَبْلٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَبَآءُو بِغَضَبٍۢ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْمَسْكَنَةُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ يَكْفُرُونَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَقْتُلُونَ ٱلْأَنۢبِيَآءَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّۢ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوا۟ وَّكَانُوا۟ يَعْتَدُونَ ﴾

“Overshadowed by ignominy are they wherever they may be, save [when they bind themselves again] in a bond with God and a bond with men; for they have earned the burden of God's condemnation, and are overshadowed by humiliation: all this [has befallen them] because they persisted in denying the truth of God's messages and in slaying the prophets against all right: all this, because they rebelled [against God], and persisted in transgressing the bounds of what is right.”

আল্লাহ্‌র প্রতিশ্রুতি ও মানুষের প্রতিশ্রুতির বাইরে যেখানেই তাদেরকে পাওয়া গেছে সেখানেই তারা লাঞ্ছিত হয়েছে। আর তারা আল্লাহ্‌র ক্রোধের পাত্র হয়েছে এবং তাদের উপর দারিদ্র নির্ধারণ করে দেয়া হয়েছে। এটা এ জন্যে যে, তারা আল্লাহ্‌র আয়াতসমূহের সাথে কুফরী করত এবং অন্যায়ভাবে নবীগণকে হত্যা করত; তা এজন্য যে, তারা অবাধ্য হয়েছিল এবং সীমালংঘন করত।
